MIT: Martin-Mansfield Legacy 0-0
Arlington Martin and Mansfield Legacy played to a scoreless draw on Friday at Cravens Field in the Martin Invitational Tournament. Both squads enjoyed spurts of possession and did a fine job of trying to pass with positive intentions.
The Warriors (1-1-3) continue to look for the winning combination in the attack with four goals in five matches.
Martin coach Cory Elolf said he's looking for a "sense of urgency" among the Warriors with District 4-5A matches beginning on Tuesday.
Class 4A Mansfield Legacy improved to 5-2-1 among nothing but Class 5A opposition.

South Hills looks creative
Fort Worth South Hills is showing promise with its offensive versatility, coach Steve Andrews said. Senior striker Oscar Ayala is the team's strongest offensive player, but the Scorpions are scoring in a variety of ways. "It's everybody. And it's not just from the left or the right or set pieces or crosses or penetrations," Andrews said. "It's surprising for me. Usually we have a more predictable team. But we've got a vareity of kids who are creative with the ball." South Hills is 3-1 heading into Thursday night's semifinal match at the Birdville tournament against host Birdville.

North Side gets push from defense
North Side has learned one thing in its 2-1 start. It is capable of generating offense from its defense. George Galvan and Jesus Sarmiento are playing so well in the back of the formation, they are creating opportunities for the forwards. "We have a lot of stuff that is coming out of the back. You could tell in the Southlake game they had a lot of impact on what we were trying to do," coach Garth Briggeman said. The Steers lost 1-0 to Carroll, a strong offensive club. They have defeated Azle 3-2 and Denton 3-0. Friday, the Steers meet Paschal and Arlington Heights in a tournament. They'll play Mineral Wells on Saturday to close the event.

Haltom Hurting
Buffaloes coach Mike Welch thinks he'll have a good squad this year as long as they can get healthy.
Haltom (1-2-1) is missing five starters due to injury or in one case a death in the family.
"We've got to be patient and heal up," Welch said. "If we can heal up by the time district starts then we can make a run at the playoffs."

Heights depth comes through
Arlington Heights is 4-2 following a 1-0 victory last week at Aledo, despite playing without four starters. But coach Jack Warren said his unproven players showed him a lot. "We don't have much depth, but the kids that I threw out there played great," he said. "We have 10 kids back from the varsity last year, but only three were starters. We can look like an experienced group some of the time, but other times not." The Yellow Jackets play host to Paschal on Tuesday night.

Summit junior earns hat-trick by moving forward
Summit junior Liren Halle scored all three goals for the Jaguars in last week's match against Eastern Hills in the 3-0 victory.
Halle played in the back plenty last season but coach Dave McDonald hopes to get him forward this season. Certainly, with performances like that one, McDonald appears wise in the positional shift.
"The stuff he did was really crafty," McDonald said. "All three were brilliant, really, really good goals."

South Hills still looking for itself

Its almost as if the season hasn’t really started for the Scorpions, who’ve had one game so far due to weather cancellations.

South Hill dropped a 1-0 decision to Burleson off a blast from the Elks' danger man Kendall Rockers.

"We went to sleep on him and he tattooed us," South Hill coach Steve Andrews said. "You can’t do that with kids like (Rockers)"

South Hills travels to Brewer tonight for the Scorpions’ second game. Andrews said he just doesn’t have a feel yet for his squad that normally has played four or five matches by now.

"Our forwards just need to play a full game of concentration," Andrews said. "They just need to relax in front of the goal."

Legacy rolling already

Mansfield Legacy secured a spot in the finals of the Garland ISD tournament on Friday morning with a 3-0 victory against Sachse.

The Broncos, state semifinalists in 2009, are off to a hot start this year at 3-0.

Legacy knocked off South Garland 4-1 on Thursday. Regardless of Saturday morning’s matchup against North Mesquite, Legacy has already secured a spot in Saturday’s 8 p.m. final.

"We have a lot of confidence from last year," Legacy coach Aaron Cottrell said. "Our team chemistry, team unity is already strong."

Sophomore forward Connor Copeland bagged four goals in the past two matches.

Mansfield just needs playing time
Oh, Mother Nature. You love her one day and can’t stand her the next. Last weekend, area soccer teams couldn’t stand her. Why? Well, she cancelled nearly every soccer tournament scheduled, which put young teams in precarious situations with district play peaking around the corner. One of those teams was Mansfield, which returns just five starters from last season.
“It tremendously hurts because it is three games that we are doing without,” Tigers coach John Fazekas said. “They would be helping us prepare for the season.”
Mansfield will only have played six games by the time district starts.
“The thing is, most teams are in the same boat as we are,” he said. “We just need to play so we can get those younger kids acclimated to what varsity soccer is all about.
“We spend a lot of time scrimmaging at the end of our practices. The thing is we just need to play games so we can figure out who plays where best. We need as many games as possible before district so we have all these questions answered.”

There, the Tigers lost a 1-0 match to El Paso Bel Air, which also beat Arlington Sam Houston in the area round. Arlington defeated Abilene 2-1 in overtime of its bi-district match before falling to El Paso Americas 5-4 in the second round. Like the Colts, Arlington Martin also lost in the area round. Grapevine keeper now midfielder
Grapevine's Alex Mueller played last year in goal and earned first team all-district honors in the net.
However, this season Muller will make the swicth to midfielder in order to help bolster the Mustangs midfield. Sophomore goalkeeper Richard Mayes will get the starting nod in goal.
Grapevine coach Heath Bullard will use Tuesday's match against Southlake as a barometer in formations and player chemistry rather than worrying too much about the result.
