Summit 10, Mansfield 0 (F)
Jazmin Robinson's walk off homer in the bottom of the sixth gave Summit (15-4, 7-0 District 4-5A) run rule win at home on Thursday night.
The game started to unravel in the fourth inning for Mansfield (14-6, 6-2) pitcher Danielle Hubbard, as her location became erratic and led to three Summit runs.
"We had opportunities in the first inning to score, and we had a chance to get the momentum, but they got it and we couldn't get it back," said Mansfield coach Jay Harvill. "It started to fall apart from there. We didn't get the big hits, and obviously they did."
Summit pitcher Eli Torres was on top of her game for the Lady Jaguars, as she struck out 10 and recorded a double in the big fourth inning.
"We have been feeling it as of late, and been (coming together), but I didn't expect 10 to nothing," said Summit coach Karah Kinder. "I would say that it was our best game this year. We finally put some hits together and worked together as a team. Pitching, hitting, defense...it was all good tonight."

Keller gets company
Azle, Mansfield Legacy and Birdville have joined Keller in the Texas Girls Coaches Association state poll. Keller (21-1) has been a fixture near the top five of the Class 5A rankings all season and is second behind Coppell and just in front of The Woodlands, which can attribute much of its success to Mansfield transfer Paige McDuffee.
Azle checks in at No. 21 in the 4A poll, just ahead of No. 23 Mansfield Legacy and No. 25 Birdville, which is tied at that position with Crosby. Frisco Wakeland, Manvel and Elgin hold down the top three spots in 4A.

Timberview pitcher perfect
Mansfield Timberview freshman Ashley Tharp struck out 19 batters to get her first perfect game in her high school career.
“She’s been getting better,” Timberview coach Tonya Mooney said. “We’ve faced some tough competition, but now we are starting to get some good weather, she is starting to pitch really well.”
The Lady Wolves (8-10, 2-0) beat Everman 5-0 Tuesday. Tharp is now (8-6) on the season.

Heights eager to get games under belt
Arlington Heights is 2-2 with a young team that hasn’t gotten to play much yet because of rainy weather. But the Yellow Jackets hope to get a lot of action by the weekend. They’ll play two games at a tournament at Gateway Park, host a district game on Friday against Polytechnic, play more tournament games on Saturday and then play another district game Monday against Wyatt. "That should give us five, six, seven games," coach Jim Whitley said. "We need some good weather so we can get out and so something. Because it messes up our practice time, too." Whitley said he has a lot of sophomores player, plus two freshmen. "We’ve got a freshman pitcher who does pretty good," he said. "She’s getting better every game."

Bowie adjusting well without Veyna
An adjustment period is going to ensue anytime a team loses a pitcher to graduation like Arlington Bowie did with Victoria Veyna at the end of last season. Luckily for the Lady Volunteers, this season’s “transition period” hasn’t been that bad.
Bowie is 10-6 overall and 1-1 in District 4-5A even though it fields a roster that includes seven freshmen, two of which have replaced Veyna (Texas Southern) in the pitcher’s circle.
“I am real comfortable with the progress that we are making,” Bowie coach Kari Kitchens said. “We are a very young team. We are having to, not start all over again, but build new relationships with those freshmen.”
“It’s hard to replace someone like Victoria. She was a pretty dominant pitcher and someone our defense depended on a great amount of the time to get certain outs. The girls this year are doing a good job.”
The biggest reason that Bowie has held steady is junior catcher Kassy Torres, who caught Veyna for two seasons.
“I am very blessed to have Torres behind the plate,” Kitchens said. “The pitchers are really learning from her. She calls all of the pitches. I don’t. She is so very good at it and I am very blessed for that.”

Torres, Robinson spark Summit

Mansfield Summit’s plan for success is a simple one: Give the ball to junior Eli Torres and let her go to work in the pitcher’s circle.

So far, so good for the Lady Jaguars. Torres is 7-2 this season and the team is 10-3-2 overall and 2-0 in the always top-heavy District 4-5A. But Summit head coach Karah Kinder has the luxury of handing the ball over to two other pitchers should Torres ever need a break, and it has benefited everyone so far. Jazmin Robinson threw a no-hitter against Arlington Lamar on March 5 and Niki Owens has one win under her belt in two appearances.

“I really rely on Torres for any big game but it is very nice to have the other two pitchers,” Kinder said. “The other two really help Eli.”

Torres and Robinson both played a big roll in Summit’s key 3-2 win over Mansfield on March 3. Torres pitched a complete-game 4-hitter and Robinson smashed a home run.

“I think it was a terrible game for both of us,” Kinder said. “I think the next game will be much bigger. They had the bases loaded with two outs in the 7th inning. So it could have been completely different.”
